CIUDAD2020 is an Impronta Project whose aims are twofold: to push forward the areas of energy efficiency, human behaviour, environmental sustainability, transport and mobility, along with the Internet of the future and the Internet of Things; and to design the city of the future, which should be sustainable, intelligent and efficient.  

CIUDAD2020 has conceived, designed and implemented a new paradigm for a sustainable and efficient city that is based on three main axes:

  1. Energy
  2. Transport
  3. Environmental control

The CIUDAD2020 project  intends to reach its 20-20-20 objectives , which are   20% emissions reduction, 20% renewable energy production, and 20% improvement of energetic efficiency.


With this aim, the Internet of the Future is proposed as the basic element capable of stimulating both the synergies between energy, transport and environmental control and the interaction with the citizens, thus converting CIUDAD2020  into a reference model in which all cities should mirror if they want to reach  the quality of life, efficiency and sustainability that big cities should boast in the 21th century. To achieve this objective a consortium of companies and PROs (Public Research Organizations) has been created. Such a consortium has great experience both at national and international level, which ensures the diffusion of the results obtained during the execution of the proposal.

The role of the UPM in this project

The Ontology Engineering Group (OEG) participates in this project through the following use cases:

1. Energy consumption information provided to company “facility managers.”

This means that OEG will provide the means for transforming and publishing data on energy consumption to companies, town councils and individuals. These data will be published using the web standards of Linked Data and also ontologies, the latter developed under the notion of being agreed upon by a wide number of stakeholders, including the European Commission.

2.  Information on location and rental of bikes in the city.

Linked data will provide information on bikes and rental locations at any time by means of the techniques used for identifying URIs in data streaming. Additionally, OEG will develop some small application   to demonstrate how these data can be used. This application will also make use of meteorological data and city events that may have some impact on the availability of the bikes.


3 Information on meteorological stations and air quality monitoring stations located in cities.

OEG will continuously update and publish the data of the AEMET meteorological stations (thus improving the work carried out previously in http://aemet.linkeddata.es/). It will also complete this information with data coming from the meteorological stations of the cities that have joined this study case (such as Santander through its SmartSantander intitiative and Zaragoza) . The ontologies to represent these cases will be developed by consensus; besides, they will adapt the SSN Ontology developed by W3C. These data will be completed with data extracted from different sources (e.g.,  Pachube). OEG will provide citizens and/or scientists with visualization tools.
